Steven Spielberg Directs ‘Chaos in Beijing 2008’ – Or: ‘In the future everyone will be called a Nazi for 15 minutes’

I know the story has been brewing for a while, the lobbying, pressure groups, and media coverage have been grinding away for months now. But today it was confirmed that Steven Spielberg has stepped down as Artistic Director for the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The issues surrounding China’s policy regarding Sudan have generated lots of media noise.

Some 200,000 people are estimated to have died and 2.5 million driven from their homes over the last four years of conflict in Sudan’s western region of Darfur, according to estimates by international experts. The Sudanese government in Khartoum put the death toll at a comparatively modest 9,000.

China are of course the main purchaser of Sudan’s exported oil. In return China is the largest supplier of weapons to the East African country.

Mr Spielberg’s statement expressed how his conscience would not allow him to continue his work on the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies for the Aug 8-24 Games while “unspeakable crimes” continued to be committed in Darfur.

The statement was released on the same day that nine Nobel Peace laureates — including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel and Jody Williams — sent a letter to President Hu Jintao urging a change in China’s policy toward its ally Sudan.

He sent his own letter after actress and Darfur activist Mia Farrow said he risked becoming to the Beijing Games what Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl was to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Strong words perhaps, but she has a point.

The pressure from Mia Farrow’s Nazi comment to Mr Spielberg does divert me through to a blog observation and an internet ‘law’
