NBC – digital stats for Beijing Olympics 08

While reading a presentation from Microsoft concerning cloud computing platforms and applications HERE.

I came across 3 slides that demonstrated the level of digital activity relating to NBC’s online coverage of the Beijing Olympics 2008.

The headline figures include 1.3bn views, 50m unique visitors, 70 million videos streamed and an average site visit time of 27 minutes per session. I think I need another latte while I get my head around those huge numbers.

The scale of the network capacity and systems collaboration for upload, storage and downloading is eye-watering. Imagine trying to deliver 3.4 petabytes of video to 50 million distributed consumers.

While the surge related to the one-off Olympic event. Web TV should be delivering far more than this level of content to audiences monthly in the next year or so.
