New iPad 2 to Ship by April 2011

07Dec10

Quick, return your iPad Christmas present when it arrives in a few weeks and be patient for a few months longer.

DigiTimes says Foxconn Electronics has notified staff in China that they will ship the iPad 2 within 100 days – that’s as soon as the end of February. It’s likely that sufficient stock will be pooled and distributed before the iPad 2 goes on sale however. So the new Apple slate may not be on the shelves until April 2011.

Foxconn Electronics will be shipping between 400,000 and 600,000 units in their first batch. If Apple improve the connectivity and screen resolution, as anticipated, I expect these to sell out in a week or two.

Apple sold six million iPads in the third quarter of 2010. That’s an awful lot of slates.

In a related story, several months back, Steve Jobs was reported as suggesting the iPhone and iPad would eventually converge into one product. While convergence is not set for the iPhone 5 (which is rumoured to have a different form factor than the current iPhone 4). The idea of a much larger iPhone or a much smaller iPad seems to miss the mark on the usage occasions I associate with them both.
